Forgettable Grasse

Earlier this week we visited Grasse, the famous perfume capital of the world. The fact that I remember to write about it only now illustrates just how totally unimpressive the town actually was, at least in the off-season. From Antibes you can take the Côte d’Azur train to Grasse, but note that it will only take you to the bottom of the hill. To see the old town you’ve got to climb up either by bus or by foot as we chose to (’cause we’re sporty).
There are loads of parfumeries in the old town, some of which have free museums and cheap stores, and you can’t escape the scents while walking around. According to Wikipedia, Grasse “produces over two-thirds of France’s natural aromas”, which I guess is a lot. What made Grasse so unimpressive was the lack of eye-catching sights and monuments. Also, compared to every other town I’ve been here so far the streets were dirty and the supposedly idyllic streets were everything but.
A noteworthy thing, though, is that if you plan your visit to Grasse in advance, you might want to book a tour to the museums. You can design and make your own scents in some of the factories for a reasonable amount of money. That actually would sound pretty interesting even to a testosterone filled dude such as myself.

Sportylicious 😀
